Allergy Testing Q & A

What causes allergies?

Allergies are a very common reaction of an overactive immune system. Your immune system’s job is to make antibodies, which identify harmful invaders — like bacteria and viruses — and fight them off. Antibodies are always on high alert and release chemicals such as histamine, which are a defense mechanism.

When you have allergies, your immune system starts associating harmless substances as dangerous invaders. For instance, even though pet dander is perfectly safe, with allergies, your immune system identifies pet dander as a threat and goes into overdrive to attack it and keep you healthy.

Anyone of any age can develop allergies, especially if they tend to run in your family. Some of the most common causes of allergies include:

  • Environmental allergens, including cottonwood, pollen, dust, and mold
  • Medications, especially anything penicillin-based
  • Insect stings, as with a bee or wasp

Foods can cause allergy issues, too. Peanuts, dairy foods, shellfish, wheat, and soy are just some of the most common causes of food allergies.

When should I see a doctor for allergies?

Even seemingly minor allergies can become serious — you just never know how your immune system is going to react. In severe cases, an allergy attack can lead to anaphylaxis, which can make it difficult for you to breathe and can become life-threatening.

Because allergies can be dangerous and are known for lowering your quality of life, it’s important to come to Houston Family MD if you regularly experience any of the following issues:

  • Sneezing or coughing
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Hives or rashes
  • Swelling
  • Wheezing
  • Itching

If you have a food allergy, you may also find that your lips, tongue, or throat swell when you consume the problematic substance. In any case, if any of these symptoms (or others) are affecting you, don’t hesitate to come in to Houston Family MD for an evaluation.

Is there an effective allergy treatment?

Houston Family MD provides in-office scratch tests and blood tests to check for allergies. Once Dr. Grewal identifies which allergens are triggering your symptoms, he counsels you about treatment options. Allergy treatments can include:

  • Nasal sprays
  • Allergen avoidance
  • Antihistamine medications
  • Emergency epinephrine injections (for serious allergies)

Dr. Grewal also provides immunotherapy. This highly effective allergy treatment involves getting several injections that introduce very small amounts of the allergen into your body. Over time and a series of increased injection dosages, your immune system starts getting used to the allergen, and your symptoms gradually improve.

Before allergies affect you another day, contact Houston Family MD to get started on effective treatment. Book an appointment online or by phone, or walk-in for immediate care.
